Long Trails

TV shows and movies about hiking, adventure and the outdoors

I have decided to provide a mega list of TV shows and movies about hiking. Because there are not so many of them I have included adventure type shows like ones that show survival techniques.

I will try and categorize them as best I can but they’ll be some crossover.

I hope you enjoy anything new that you might not have seen or know about and I welcome any additions too!

HIKING / BACKPACKING

I thought I would dive straight into my favorite topic of hiking! I decided to include a few movies about mountaineering too although the main focus is really on hiking. I use the term ‘backpacking’ as wilderness backpacking, not the European meaning which is more urban backpacking e.g. taking a gap year in Asia. For this reason I won’t be including Wolf Creek!

So without further ado here are the TV shows and movies all about hiking.

Into the Wild (2007)

Directed by Sean Penn, Into the Wild follows the journey of Christopher Mcandless as he ultimately ends up hiking the Stampede Trail in Alaska.  It’s first on our list for many reasons.

Tracks (2012)

Directed by John Curran a remarkable true story of Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska), a young woman who leaves her life in the city behind to make a solo trek through almost 2,000 miles of sprawling Australian desert.

Wild (2014)

The story of Cheryl Strayed who haunted by memories of her mother Bobbi and with absolutely no experience, she sets out to hike more than a thousand miles on the Pacific Crest Trail all on her own. WILD powerfully reveals her terrors and pleasures – as she forges ahead on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

The Way (2010)

A movie about the World famous Camino de Santiago! Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as ‘The Way of Saint James’.

A Walk in the Woods (2015)

Upon his arrival back in the United States following two decades in the UK, Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) wants to find a way to reconnect with his homeland. Impulsively he decides to hike The Appalachian Trail, 1000 arduous miles stretching from Maine to Georgia.

127 Hours (2011)

The incredible true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston’s (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a falling boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated slot canyon in Utah.

Touching the Void (2003)

OK this is more mountaineering than hiking but I thought it deserved to be on the list. true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.

Walking the Amazon – Ed Stafford (2013)

This awesome journey is well worth a watch! The story began in April 2008, Ed Stafford and his friend Luke Collyer attempt to become the first people to ever walk from the source of the Amazon River in Southern Peru to the mouth of the river on the Brazilian Atlantic coast.

Walking the Nile – Levison Wood (2014)

On a similar theme to the above adventure this one follows British explorer Levison Wood’s expedition to walk the length of the River Nile from source to sea. His nine-month seven million step journey takes him through jungles savannah deserts cities and war zones.

On Thin Ice (2009)

This is more skiing than hiking but I thought it deserved to be included. Double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, TV presenter Ben Fogle and Doctor Ed Coats compete in one of the world’s greatest challenges – the 2009 race to the South Pole – the first organised race since Scott and Amundsen almost 100 years ago.

Into Thin Air

Ok so this is more mountaineering than hiking but I thought it was a worthy of an entry here. The book is particularly thrilling too! The movie is an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s best selling book, “Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster”.

It attempts to recreate the disastrous events that took place during the Mount Everest climb on May 10, 1996. The movie is over 20 years old and didn’t even get great reviews but I still think it’s worth a watch.

The Hiking Trip

Ok this one is thrown in for a bit of a giggle. It does actually have the word hiking in it!

“THE HIKING TRIP” is about a young woman named Tracy, ventures out with some friends on a hiking trip that turns into a nightmare. That is her story but will anyone believe her?

Do you dare put yourself through watching this movie? Thought not!
