Terms of Service

Last updated: October 22, 2026

1. Who runs Long Trails

Long Trails (“the Service”) at longtrails.org is operated by Dan Eils, an individual based in Florida, United States (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at hello@longtrails.org. We do not have a postal address for correspondence; email is the way to contact us.

2. Acceptance of these terms

By using the Service, creating an account, or opening a trip somebody shared with you, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

3. The Service

Long Trails is a hiking trail discovery and planning platform. We provide curated trail information, mountain hut details, route planning tools, and community features to help hikers plan and share their trips. The map data comes largely from OpenStreetMap and other open sources; hut details come from hut websites, alpine club data and hikers. Every source and its licence is listed on the data sources page.

4. Safety: this is planning help, not a guide you can rely on

Long Trails is not a substitute for proper trip planning, navigation, local knowledge, or outdoor safety skills.

Trail conditions change with weather, season, rockfall, snow, closures and maintenance. Distances, elevation figures, difficulty ratings, hut opening times, prices and facilities shown on Long Trails are compiled from third-party and community sources, may be wrong, and may be out of date. We do not verify them on the ground.

Before and during any trip you are responsible for:

  • checking current conditions, weather and avalanche or wildfire warnings with local authorities and hut keepers;
  • confirming that a hut is open, has space, and accepts the way you intend to pay;
  • carrying a proper map, navigation tools, and the gear, food and water the route needs;
  • judging your own fitness and experience against the route, and turning back when conditions change;
  • telling somebody your plan and when you expect to be back.

Mountain walking can cause serious injury or death. You use the Service and go into the hills entirely at your own risk. We are not responsible for decisions you make based on information from the Service.

5. Your account

You can use most of the Service without an account. Saving and sharing create an account for you; signing in with Google or an emailed sign-in link lets you keep it across devices. There are no passwords. You agree to:

  • keep the email account and Google account you sign in with secure;
  • give accurate information when you choose a username or display name;
  • tell us at once if you believe somebody else has used your account;
  • be at least 13 years old to create an account.

We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms. You can delete your account at any time from your profile; see the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data.

6. Your content

Routes, trips, comments, trip reports, photos and profile details you add stay yours. By posting them you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display and distribute them within the Service, and to show them to people you share a trip with. Public content is visible to anyone.

You agree not to post content that:

  • is misleading or knowingly wrong about trail or hut conditions;
  • harasses, threatens or demeans anyone;
  • infringes somebody else's copyright or other rights, including photos you do not have the right to share;
  • is illegal where you are or where we operate, or promotes illegal activity or trespass;
  • is spam, advertising or commercial solicitation.

We may remove content that breaks these rules and suspend repeat offenders. New accounts' first comments may be held for review before they appear.

7. Reporting content and takedown requests

Every comment and trip report has a Report control. Use it for spam, abuse, wrong trail information, copyright problems, or content you believe is illegal. If you prefer email, write to support@longtrails.org with a link to the content and the reason.

Reports of illegal content and rights-holder takedown requests are read within 48 hours. When a report is justified we remove or hide the content, and we tell the person who posted it why. Third-party photos shown on hut and route pages carry the author and licence they were published under; if you are the author and want a photo removed or credited differently, email us and we will do it within 48 hours.

If you are in the European Union, this section and the report control are our point of contact under the Digital Services Act. We do not use automated decision-making to remove content without a person looking at it.

8. Acceptable use

You may not:

  • scrape, crawl, bulk-download or automate access to the Service or its data without our written permission;
  • try to get into other accounts or systems, or probe or test them without permission;
  • interfere with the Service or with other people's use of it;
  • use the Service for anything unlawful.

9. Third-party services and data

The Service runs on and uses third-party providers, including Supabase, Vercel, Cloudflare, Hetzner, Resend, Sentry and map and photo sources such as OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia Commons. Your use of the Service is also subject to those providers' and sources' terms where they apply, for example the Open Database Licence for OpenStreetMap data. The full list, with what each one does, is in the Privacy Policy.

10. No warranty and limitation of liability

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for injury, loss or damage arising from hiking or other outdoor activity, or from reliance on information in the Service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim, which today is nothing. Some jurisdictions do not allow some of these limits, so some may not apply to you.

11. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be settled by talking to us first is to be brought in the state or federal courts located in Florida, and you consent to their jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your country of residence.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. Material changes are announced in the Service and the “last updated” date moves. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
