Everything on the map comes from somewhere. This page lists each source, what we take from it and the licence it is published under.
OpenStreetMap extracts are refreshed monthly (the third day of each month). Regions are rebuilt from the latest extracts when we run a build, and curated routes are never overwritten by a refresh; they are republished when one is edited. The route library was last published on Sep 30, 2026.
Hut opening dates, prices and facilities go stale between refreshes. If you find one wrong, email hello@longtrails.org with the hut name; see the support page. For conditions on the ground, read the safety section of our terms.

Consulted when we prepare the data. Your browser never contacts these.
Opening dates, prices, facilities and contact details as the hut keepers and alpine clubs publish them (facts, not copied text; they go stale and are corrected on report), and for some huts the photo from the hut’s own website.

Map label glyphs (Open Sans, Noto Sans), self-hosted on our data origin.
Route cover photos and most hut photos come from Wikimedia Commons, and we take only files whose licence allows it: CC0, public domain, CC BY and CC BY-SA. The author and the licence are shown with the photo. Some hut photos are the picture the hut publishes on its own website; those are the hut's. Faces are blurred. If you are the author of a photo and want it removed or credited differently, email support@longtrails.org; we act within 48 hours.
Short hut descriptions are generated from the facts above by a language model. They can be wrong; tell us at hello@longtrails.org and we correct them.
The underlying map data is OpenStreetMap's, under the Open Database Licence, and you can take it from OpenStreetMap directly. The trail tiles, routing graph and place files we build from it are derived databases under the same licence. Our curated routes, stage splits and hut facts are ours; ask at hello@longtrails.org before reusing them. Bulk download and scraping are not allowed.
